I think this saying is akin to the one, ';Don't judge a book by it's cover.'; It's a gentle reminder, that one, all that glitters is not gold, and two, you should always look deeper than the surface. Sometimes it's not instantly obvious, the beauty of a person's heart and soul, but you should always be willing to look for it, less you find that others are less willing to look at yours!
